FTC Releases Survey of ID Theft (27.3
Million Victims in Past 5 Years)
The Federal Trade Commission today released a survey showing that 27.3
million Americans have been victims of identity theft in the last five years, including
9.9 million people in the last year alone. According to the survey, last years
identity theft losses to businesses and financial institutions totaled nearly $48 billion
and consumer victims reported $5 billion in out-of-pocket expenses. The agency also
released a Commission report detailing its ID theft program since its inception.

some sort of identity theft protection as an employee benefit. An employer can
choose whether or not to pay for this benefit. The key is to make the
protection available, and have a mandatory employee meeting on identity theft and the
protection you are making available, similar to what most employers do for health
